Tight Space Timber Rack

One of the first steps to claim back some space is finding a home for bulky items and timber sheets. Taking advantage of vertical space is a must. I decided to construct a rack that could house some tools that don’t necessarily get used every day underneath and above store full sheets of plywood or other sheet material, plus fit some longer straight pieces of pine and hardwood.

The rack also houses a storage cupboard and the face once clad can be used to hang jigs and clamps off.

The main issue of doing this build is now the whole workshop needs to be pulled out to make room for the project. All whilst still being able to use the tools to make the project. Its totally a case of moving the router table so I can use the drop saw, but the jointer is in the way. Then moving the drop saw so I can use the floor space to fix the frame together. Retrospectively I should of built this before now.

The frame work is standard 70x35mm pine and the face is clad in 12mm ply. I’ve skinned the top and bottom of each compartment in 4mm bracing ply to help the sheets slide in. The cupboard is 18mm plywood.

This is the first build with the goal of making space in the workshop and the effects are immediate. Not only does the rack organise all of the material in the shop, the whole exercise lead me to dispose a whole heap of stuff I was never going to use. Being able to store bulky machinery underneath frees up so much space. I can breathe again.
